The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) has announced the recipients of the 2017-2018 Accountemps Scholarship Award. The award, part of AICPA’s Legacy Scholars program, provides financial assistance to four undergraduate and graduate-level accounting students who demonstrate potential to become leaders in the CPA profession. Each recipient will be awarded $10,000 in tuition assistance for the 2017-18 academic year. The recipients were selected from more than 600 undergraduate and graduate applicants across the nation.

“Each of these students exhibit leadership skills that will help them excel as they enter the accounting profession,” said Joanne Fiore, AICPA vice president of professional media, pathways and inclusion. “The AICPA is pleased to provide these talented and motivated students with guidance and financial assistance as they work to complete their education and earn their CPA license.”

The four 2017-2018 AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship award recipients are listed in alphabetical order below:

  • Alexander Balkan, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • Aileen Duong, Gonzaga University
  • Adam Kershner , Babson College
  • Stormm Phillips, Jacksonville University

The Accountemps Student Scholarship award is one of four distinct scholarships that comprise the AICPA Legacy Scholars Program. Students selected for an AICPA Legacy Scholarship award host on-campus events to promote the CPA profession. This provides them the opportunity to learn skills that enhance their leadership and communication abilities by building relationships among their peers and CPAs who are currently working in the profession.

The 2017-2018 Legacy Scholars Awards provided a total of more than $630,000 for 123 deserving accounting students. AICPA Legacy Scholars are Student Affiliate Members of the AICPA, which is a free-membership option offered to all college students. Legacy Scholars have access to a coach who mentors them, providing them with direction and guidance along their path to become a licensed CPA.

“We are proud to partner with the AICPA in recognizing future leaders within the accounting profession,” said Michael Steinitz, executive director of Accountemps. “We congratulate the AICPA/Accountemps Student Scholarship recipients and look forward to their future career success.”

Eligibility for the Accountemps Scholarship award is based on academic achievement, demonstration of leadership, service and overall commitment to becoming a licensed CPA. Applicants considered must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and at least 30 semester hours in college-level coursework, including six semester hours in accounting. The four recipients were selected by a task force comprised of AICPA Student Recruitment Committee members, Accountemps staff and CPA volunteers.
